Evaluation of Urinary Calcium in 53 Healthy Persons Over 24 Hours

Abstract:

SUMMARY A 24 hour urinary calcium was measured in 21 healthy women and 32 healthy men. There were 20 evaluated once, 30 twice, and in 3 cases, urine collections were repeated 3 times. Oral calcium intake and urinary creatinine over 24 hours were also measured. The mean urine calcium in women was 126 mg/24 h and the range was 45-225, in men the values were 171 and 65-246. Oral daily calcium intake was 655 and 834 in women and men, respectively. The mean of 2 urine calcium determinations exceeded 200 mg/24 h in only one woman and more than 250 in none of the men. Our conclusion is that: 24 hour calcium intake and excretion in healthy individuals are lower than those values in Western countries, probably due to dietary deficiencies of meat and dairy products and decreased exposure to sun. We also concluded that in two different urine collection, women who excrerte more than 200 mg and men who excrerte more than 250 mg calcium are probably hypercalciuric subjects.
